Besides 'rise/lift', 起来 has three common extended meanings. (1) Starting and continuing: 哭了起来, 热起来了; an object goes between 起 and 来: 下起雨来 (not *下起来雨). (2) Evaluation when doing something, 'seems/when it comes to': 看起来很累, 这个手机用起来很方便. (3) Recalling or gathering: 我想起来了, 把东西收起来. Distinguish 想起来 (recall something known) from 想出来 (come up with something new).
HSK 4–5 gap fills and sentence ordering (下起雨来).
