除了 + A (以外)，S + 都… (except A) | 除了 + A (以外)，S + 还/也… (besides A, also)
除了…以外 has two meanings depending on the adverb in the second clause. With 都 (or 什么都不, 谁都不…) it excludes: 'except A, everyone…': 除了小王，我们都去了. With 还/也 it adds: 'besides A, also…': 除了汉语，他还会说日语. 以外 can be dropped or replaced by 之外. Learners often forget the adverb in the second clause, leaving the meaning unclear.
