并 + 不/没

并 before 不/没 stresses that the truth is contrary to what others assume: 这个问题并不难 'this problem isn't actually hard'. 并 is used only before a negative word, never before an affirmative verb (*我并喜欢). It often follows a clause stating a common belief, with 其实 or 但是: 大家都以为他走了，其实他并没有走.
HSK 4–5 reading: 并不 sentences often carry the key point.

This problem isn't actually hard; don't worry.

I never said anything like that.
他看起来很凶，其实并不坏。
