Although…, (but)…

(S +) 虽然 + A，但是/可是 + (S +) (还是/也) + B

This pair expresses concession: the 虽然 clause admits a fact and the second clause says something contrary to expectation. Unlike English, Chinese normally uses both words together. 但是 can be replaced by 可是/但, and the second clause often adds 还是/也/却. 虽然 may come before or after the subject (他虽然很忙…). Never pair 虽然 with 所以.

  • 虽然汉字很难，但是我很喜欢学。

  • 他虽然很忙，但是每天都去跑步。

    Although he's busy, he goes running every day.

  • 虽然下雨了，可是他们还是去了。

    Although it rained, they still went.

  • 这件衣服虽然便宜，但是很好看。

    This piece of clothing is cheap but looks great.
