Sentence + 了 | 不 + V + 了 | (快)要 + V + 了
Sentence-final 了 signals that the situation is new or has changed: 天黑了 'it's dark now', 我二十岁了. 不 + V + 了 means 'not anymore': 我不喝咖啡了. (快)要/就要 + V + 了 means something is about to happen: 快要下雨了. With a specific time, use 就要 rather than 快要 (明天就要…了, not *明天快要…了). A sentence can have both verb-了 and final 了: 我学了两年了 'I have been studying for two years (and still am)'.
HSK 1–2 listening and reading; HSK 3 often tests 快要…了 and 不…了.
