在, 正在 or 正…呢 before the verb marks an action in progress, like '-ing'; 呢 at the end makes it sound more natural. 正在 stresses 'right at that moment' and often pairs with a 'when…' clause (你来的时候，我正在洗澡). Do not combine 在 with 了, 过 or result complements, and do not use it with non-process verbs like 是, 知道, 认识, 有. The negative is 没(在) + V: 我没在看电视.

我在吃饭呢，一会儿给你打电话。
I'm eating; I'll call you back in a bit.
