过 after a verb expresses past experience, like 'have ever': 我去过北京. Unlike 了, 过 is KEPT in the negative: 我没去过北京 (not *不去过). Questions: 你吃过…吗？ or 你吃过…没有？. It often appears with 以前, 从来没, 曾经 and with frequency (去过两次). For a specific completed action (I bought it yesterday), use 了, not 过.
HSK 2–3 listening and reading; HSK 3 writing often asks for 过.
