甚至 introduces the most extreme or surprising case to stress degree: 他很忙，甚至周末也要加班 'he's so busy he even works weekends'. It often combines with 连…都/也 (甚至连老人都会唱). It can stand before a verb, a subject, or a noun in a list (很多人，甚至孩子，都…). Compared with 而且 (simple addition), 甚至 emphasizes going beyond expectations.
