难免

Hard to avoid; bound to

HSK 5HSK 3.0 · 6

(S) + 难免 + (会/有/要) + V/Adj (undesirable outcome)

难免 says that in a given situation something undesirable is natural and hard to avoid: 第一次上台演讲,难免会紧张 'it's natural to be nervous giving a speech for the first time'. It is usually followed by something negative (犯错, 紧张, 出问题, 不习惯), often with 会. It has a sympathetic, softening tone. Don't confuse it with 避免 'avoid' (a verb taking an object: 避免错误) or 以免 'so as not to'.

HSK 5 gap fills; often with 避免 and 以免 as distractors.
