TOCFL Band A · Reading · questions 1–15

Part 1 of the Band A reading test (questions 1–15): each question has a picture and four Chinese sentences; you choose the sentence that describes the picture. The reading test is 50 questions in 60 minutes, so do this part quickly — about 40 seconds per question.

Tips

  • Look at the picture for three seconds and ask: who, doing what, where, how many. Then read each sentence and cross out any with a wrong detail.
  • Compare the four sentences: they often differ by one word only (the verb, a number, a position). Find the difference and check exactly that point against the picture.
  • Know the position words: 在桌子上面/下面/旁邊/裡面, 前面/後面. Chinese puts the reference object first: 桌子上面 = on the table, the reverse of Vietnamese word order.
  • Watch the stage of the action: 正在 (in progress), 快要…了 (about to), 已經…了 (already). Someone holding an umbrella at the door under a dark sky may be 快要下雨了, not 正在下雨.
  • Measure words are clues too: 一杯茶, 一碗麵, 一張票, 一雙鞋, 一台電腦. If the picture shows a pair of shoes and the sentence says 一隻鞋, rule it out.
  • The level is decided for reading alone: Band A needs 42/80 for Level 1 and 60/80 for Level 2 (roughly 27 and 38 correct out of 50, estimated). Hanzi Pass takes the lower skill as your overall level, so do not let reading pull your listening down.

Common traps

  • Choosing a sentence that matches most of the picture but gets one small detail wrong: 兩個人在喝咖啡 when the picture shows three people.
  • Sino-Vietnamese false friends: 便宜 ㄆㄧㄢˊ ㄧˊ (Sino-Vietnamese “tiện nghi”, comfort) means cheap; 東西 means a thing, not east and west.
  • Reading modifiers in Vietnamese order: 紅色的車 is “a red car” and 媽媽的朋友 is “mum's friend” — what comes before 的 describes what comes after it.
