HSK 3 · Reading · questions 61–70

Questions 61–70: each item has a passage of 2–4 sentences and a question starting with ★; choose one of three options. About 1–1.5 minutes per item.

Tips

  • Read the ★ question first so you know what to look for (他为什么…？, 这段话主要说…？, 关于他，可以知道…？), then read the passage.
  • The main idea is usually in the first sentence or after 但是 / 其实 / 所以; for “主要说什么” choose the option that covers the whole passage.
  • Correct options are usually paraphrased: the text says 他六点起床，七点就到公司了 ↔ the option says 他到公司很早. Check that every part of the option is supported by the text.
  • For “可以知道…” questions, eliminate options with details that are not mentioned or have a changed number or person.

Common traps

  • Options that copy a phrase from the passage are often traps: same words, but attached to another person or time.
  • True in real life but not stated: 运动对身体好 is true, but if the passage only says he likes swimming it is not the answer.
  • Reading 意见 through Sino-Vietnamese: 我对他有意见 means “I'm unhappy with him”, not “I have a suggestion for him”.

我和朋友坐火车从河内去南宁。火车晚上八点开，第二天早上六点到。我们在车上睡了一觉，到了以后一点儿也不觉得累。
Translation

My friend and I took the train from Hanoi to Nanning. It left at eight in the evening and arrived at six the next morning. We slept on the train and didn't feel tired at all when we got there.

★ 他们在火车上坐了多长时间？

Explanation

Step 1: read the question first – “多长时间” (how long) asks for a length of time, not a clock time. Step 2: find the two times in the text: the train leaves at “晚上八点” (8 p.m.) and arrives at “第二天早上六点” (6 a.m. the next day). Step 3: work it out: 8 p.m. to midnight is four hours, midnight to 6 a.m. is six more, so “十个小时” (ten hours). “八个小时” and “六个小时” are traps that simply repeat the numbers 8 and 6 from the text. The answer is B.

Translation

Dear colleagues: tomorrow at ten a.m. some guests are visiting our company, so please be in the office before half past nine. After the guests leave, everyone can finish work an hour early in the afternoon.

Explanation

Step 1: the question is only about “明天下午” (tomorrow afternoon), so skip the morning details. Step 2: the last sentence says “客人走了以后，大家下午可以早一个小时下班” (after the guests leave, everyone can finish an hour early). Step 3: “早一个小时下班” is reworded as “早点儿下班” (finish work early) – HSK options often paraphrase like this. “去机场接客人” (meet the guests at the airport) is wrong because no airport is mentioned; “在家休息” (rest at home) is wrong because everyone must come to the office that day. The answer is A.

小林的汉语考试成绩一直很好，但是他不太敢说。老师让他多跟中国人说话，所以他在学校附近的一家咖啡店找了个工作，每天都要用汉语跟客人说话。
Translation

Xiao Lin has always got good marks in his Chinese exams, but he doesn't dare to speak much. His teacher told him to talk to Chinese people more, so he found a job at a café near the school, where he has to speak Chinese with customers every day.

★ 小林为什么去咖啡店工作？

Explanation

Step 1: the question is “为什么” (why), so look for a cause-and-effect word in the text – here “所以” (so). Step 2: before “所以” is the cause: he “不太敢说” (doesn't dare to speak) and the teacher told him to “多跟中国人说话” (talk to Chinese people more). Step 3: after it is the result: a café job where he must “每天都要用汉语跟客人说话” (speak Chinese with customers every day). So the reason is “想多练习说汉语” (he wants more speaking practice). “喜欢喝咖啡” (he likes coffee) is a trap built on the word “咖啡”; “想买新手机” (buy a new phone) is not in the text at all. The answer is C.
