เคล็ดลับ

  • Listen in meaning chunks, not characters: a 16–20 character sentence usually splits into 2–3 chunks such as 我每天早上七点半 / 坐地铁 / 去公司上班. Three chunks are easier to hold than 16 separate characters.
  • Hold on to the connector frame: 虽然……但是……, 只要……就……, 不但……而且……, 因为……所以……, 从……到……. Once you catch the frame you can rebuild the sentence even if a small word slips.
  • Drill the common tone changes: two third tones (可以 kéyǐ, 永远 yóngyuǎn, 很好 hén hǎo, 我想买 wó xiáng mǎi); 一 is yí before a fourth tone (一句、一下) and yì before tones 1–3 (一起、一年、一本); 不 is bú before a fourth tone (不错、不用、不会).
  • Keep neutral tones and the r ending: 喜欢 xǐhuan, 东西 dōngxi, 找不到 zhǎo bu dào, 有点儿 yǒudiǎnr, 一点儿 yìdiǎnr — stressing these makes you sound as if you are reading character by character.
  • Start speaking as soon as the sentence ends, while your memory is fresh; pause at the comma and use question intonation when the sentence ends in 吗 / 怎么样 / 能不能.
  • If you forget a word, do not stop or fill with “uh…”: carry on fluently. A missing word costs less than a halting, unfinished sentence.

กับดักที่พบบ่อย

  • Mixing n / l (努力 nǔlì, 流利 liúlì, 讨论 tǎolùn) and saying ü as u (旅游 lǚyóu, 去 qù, 需要 xūyào) — the two most common Vietnamese pronunciation slips.
  • Reading polyphones by habit: 便宜 piányi (not biàn), 银行 yínháng, 空调 kōngtiáo, 觉得 juéde — or reading characters with their Sino-Vietnamese tone (文化 said flat like “văn hoá”).
  • Silently “fixing” the word order into Vietnamese order: 在这个公司工作 becomes 工作在这个公司, 对中国文化感兴趣 becomes 感兴趣中国文化. Repeat the order you heard.
  • Turning the third tone into a long Vietnamese hỏi / ngã tone: before another syllable only the low half is said; the full dip-and-rise comes only at the end of a sentence.

คำอธิบาย

A 16-character sentence, almost twice as long as at the beginner level, so do not memorise character by character; hear it as meaning chunks: 我每天早上七点半 / 坐地铁 / 去公司上班. The order is subject + time + means (坐地铁) + where and what — Vietnamese learners tend to move the time after the verb, so repeat it in the order you heard. 七点半 is qī diǎn bàn; 点 is a third tone before a fourth, so only the low half is said. 地铁 (dìtiě) and 上班 (shàngbān) start with falling tones: drop your voice firmly. Breathe after 七点半 and do not pause between 公司 and 上班.

คำอธิบาย

This sentence drills third-tone sandhi: 我想买 has three third tones in a row; said as a chunk it becomes wǒ xiáng mǎi or wó xiáng mǎi (only the last one stays a full third tone). 一本 is yì běn, because 一 before a third tone becomes fourth tone. 小说 (xiǎoshuō) and 给我 (gěi wǒ → géi wǒ) change too. In 有意思 (yǒu yìsi) 思 is neutral, as is the second 妹 in 妹妹 (mèimei). Chunks: 我想买一本有意思的小说 / 送给我妹妹; if you lose a word, keep the frame “买……送给……”, which carries the meaning.

คำอธิบาย

At 19 characters this is close to the longest in this part, so use the connector pair 虽然……但是…… as a frame: 这个问题虽然有点儿难 / 但是可以一起想办法. Once you hear the two halves you can rebuild the whole sentence. 有点儿 is yǒudiǎnr, with the r merged into 点, not a separate syllable. 可以 (kěyǐ, two third tones) is said kéyǐ; 一起 is yìqǐ; in 想办法 (xiǎng bànfǎ) the final 法 is a full third tone. Breathe at the comma and lift the second half slightly, since it carries the main point.
