Советы

  • Read the three options while waiting to predict the question: all places → 在哪儿; all times → 什么时候 / 几点; all activities → 想做什么.
  • Track who says what: questions usually start 男的… or 女的…. Note “man: …, woman: …” in your head on the first play.
  • Watch words of intention and advice: 吧 (suggestion), 别 (don't), 要…了 (about to), 可能 (maybe), 得 děi (must).
  • On the second play, focus on the part that answers the question you heard the first time.

  • All three options occur in the dialogue: 你去商店还是去医院?— 我先去医院,再去商店。问:女的先去哪儿? The word 先 decides.
  • Answering about the wrong speaker: the question is about 男的 but you remember what 女的 said. Do not choose before you hear the question.

    Woman: When's your birthday?

Man: September the tenth. That's next Wednesday.

Question: What date is the man's birthday?

Before listening, notice that all three options are dates (号), so listen for numbers. The man says “九月十号” (September the tenth): “九月” is the month and “十号” is the day. So the answer is “十号”. “九号” is a trap that borrows the month number “九”; “三号” borrows “三” from “星期三” (Wednesday), which is a weekday, not a date. Remember the Chinese order: 月 (month) comes before 号 (day).

Woman: Hello, what would you like to eat?

Man: I'll have the lamb and rice, and a cup of tea as well.

Question: Where are they most likely to be?

The question “最可能在哪儿?” (where are they most likely to be?) is not answered directly; you must infer it. The woman asks “您要吃点儿什么?” (what would you like to eat?) with the polite “您”, a typical waiter’s line. The man orders: “羊肉” (lamb), “米饭” (rice) and “再来一杯茶” (and a cup of tea); “来” here means “bring me”. Ordering food and drink like this happens in a “饭馆” (restaurant). “商店” (shop) also sells food, but no one asks “要吃点儿什么” there; “医院” (hospital) does not fit at all.

Man: No, she is Vietnamese. We met in Hanoi.

Question: What nationality is the man's wife?

The question contains “也” (too), which makes you expect “Chinese”, but you must listen to the answer. The man says “不是” (no) and then “她是越南人” (she is Vietnamese). So the answer is “越南人”. “中国人” is a trap: it is in the woman’s question and is denied; “美国人” is never mentioned. “在河内认识的” (we met in Hanoi) only says where they met and supports the answer.
