TOCFL Band B · Listening · questions 1–25
Part 1 of the Band B listening test (questions 1–25): each question is a conversation between two people — at school, at work, in a shop, at a clinic, about a rented flat — followed by a question with four options. The dialogues are longer than in Band A, spoken at natural speed and played only once; the whole listening test is 50 questions in about 60 minutes.

Tips
- Read the four options before listening to see whether the question is about a detail, an attitude or a decision. Options like 他不同意/他很失望 mean the question is about attitude.
- Work out the relationship and the setting from the first two lines: 老師/學生, 店員/客人, 房東/房客, 主管/同事. Many questions are 他們可能在哪裡? or 兩個人是什麼關係?
- Hear the implied meaning in Taiwanese colloquial speech: 哪有 (not really — a soft denial), 還好 (so-so), 沒差 (doesn't matter), 真的假的? (seriously?), 不會吧 (no way), 超 + adjective (super).
- What follows 可是/不過/其實 is usually what the speaker really thinks: 這家餐廳很有名,不過有點貴 → the speaker is hesitant, not praising the place.
- A question like 女的是什麼意思? asks what the woman means, usually in the last turn; keep that line in mind until you hear the question.
- Listening is scored 0–80 and the level is decided separately: Band B needs 46 for Level 3 進階級 and 61 for Level 4 高階級 (about 29 and 39 correct out of 50 with Hanzi Pass's estimated conversion). In Taiwan the 2026 sessions are computer-adaptive only, while Vietnam and other overseas centres still use the fixed paper form — the one Hanzi Pass simulates.
Common traps
- Reading 好不容易 as “not easy” and concluding “easy”: 好不容易 and 好容易 both mean “with great difficulty”. 我好不容易才買到票 = I only just managed to get a ticket.
- Misreading 差一點: 我差一點就遲到了 = I was almost late, so I was not late.
- Choosing the option that repeats the dialogue word for word; in Band B the right answer is usually a paraphrase: you hear 我最近忙得要命 → the answer is 他很忙.
- Being thrown by Taiwanese pronunciation: 和 is often read ㄏㄢˋ (hàn), 垃圾 is ㄌㄜˋ ㄙㄜˋ (lèsè), 星期 is xīngqí. Get used to them in advance.
