TOCFL Band B · Reading · questions 21–50

Part 2 (questions 21–50): about ten texts, usually with three questions each. The texts vary widely: notices, ads, emails, forms, short articles, stories, introductions. This part decides your reading score, with only about 80 seconds per question.

Tips

  • Read the questions first, then read the text with a clear goal. For detail questions, scan for key words; for main-idea or title questions (最適合的標題), read the first sentence of each paragraph.
  • Get used to the Taiwanese question phrasing: 下列何者正確? (which is correct), 何者錯誤/不正確 (which is wrong), 文中沒有提到什麼?, 作者的意思是什麼?, 文中的「…」指的是什麼?
  • Practical texts (實用閱讀) still appear in Band B but carry more information: job ads, dormitory rules, application forms. Watch the conditions 須、限、不得, the deadlines 截止、逾期 and how to apply: 線上報名、親自繳交.
  • For inference questions, choose the option the text supports most directly, not the one that sounds reasonable from your own knowledge.
  • If you are stuck on one text for more than two minutes, pick the best option, mark it in the booklet and move on; come back if time allows. Wrong answers cost nothing, so fill in every answer before time is up.
  • The reading level is decided separately from listening: Band B needs 48/80 for Level 3 and 64/80 for Level 4 (about 30 and 40 correct out of 50, estimated). The reading cut scores are higher than the listening ones, so do not get complacent.

Common traps

  • Missing the negative in the question: 何者錯誤, 不正確, 沒有提到 — reading it as “which is correct” throws away an easy point.
  • Choosing an option that is true in real life but not stated in the text.
  • An option that copies many words from the text but changes one detail (the time, the person, a negation); check it against the original sentence before choosing.
  • Sino-Vietnamese false friends: 表情 (“biểu tình”, which means a protest in Vietnamese) is a facial expression; 方便 (“phương tiện”, means of transport) means convenient; 單位 means a unit of measure but also an organisation or workplace.
