TOCFL Band C · Mendengar · soalan 1–20

Part 1 of the Band C listening test (questions 1–20): long conversations at natural speed about work, academic life, social issues, negotiations or disagreements; each is followed by one question with four options. The questions are mostly about implied meaning, attitude and purpose rather than details you hear directly. Each conversation is played once.

Tip

  • Work out the purpose of the conversation quickly: asking permission, complaining, persuading, politely refusing, negotiating. Questions are often 男的主要想表達什麼? or 女的對這件事的態度是什麼?
  • Know the patterns that carry implied meaning: 難道…嗎 (surely not — rhetorical), 何必 (why bother), 不見得/未必 (not necessarily), 說得也是,不過… (partial agreement, then disagreement), 巴不得 (can't wait to), 恨不得 (wish one could right away), 怪不得 (no wonder).
  • Separate concession from real opinion: after 話是沒錯/你說的也有道理 comes 可是… — that is where the speaker's real view is.
  • Idioms and indirect speech are frequent: 半途而廢, 一舉兩得, 心不在焉, 吃力不討好. You do not need every character; infer from the context and the tone of voice.
  • Read the options first but do not decide too early: in Band C all four options usually contain words from the recording; the right one matches the speaker's final position.
  • Each skill is scored 0–80 and levelled separately: Band C needs 50 in listening for Level 5 流利級 and 61 for Level 6 精通級 (about 32 and 39 correct out of 50 with Hanzi Pass's estimated conversion). Hanzi Pass simulates the fixed paper form used at test centres outside Taiwan, including Vietnam.

Perangkap lazim

  • Taking a rhetorical question literally: 我哪知道他會來? is not a question but means “how was I supposed to know he would come”.
  • 不見得 and 不一定 mean “not necessarily”, not “definitely not”; an option that denies it completely goes beyond what the speaker said.
  • Sino-Vietnamese false friends: 激動 (“kích động”, to incite) means moved or excited; 爭取 (“tranh thủ”, to make use of time) means to strive for; 景氣 (“cảnh khí”) means the state of the economy.
