TOCFL Band A: test format and how to reach level 1 or 2

TOCFL Band A at a glance

Band A is the lowest of the three main bands A, B and C (below it there is also the Novice band). One Band A paper gives you one of three results: level 1 入門級, level 2 基礎級, or no level if you score below the level 1 cut score. New to the test? Read What is TOCFL first.

The table below summarises the Band A layout as Hanzi Pass simulates it: each part, its question type and its items. The official site confirms 4 listening parts and 5 reading parts (45 multiple-choice and 5 matching items); the exact split of items per part and the number of options are not published in detail, so the real paper may differ slightly.

• Listening: 50 items, about 60 minutes, 4 parts, 0–80 scale.
• Reading: 50 items, 60 minutes, 5 parts, 0–80 scale.
• Script: Hanzi Pass uses traditional characters (TOCFL papers exist in traditional and simplified).
• Reference vocabulary: about 1,000 words.

Band A Listening: 4 question types

Listening moves from short picture items to longer recordings. Many sources say each recording is played only once (the official pages do not state it), so Hanzi Pass mock tests play it once too.

• 看圖回答 – Picture questions: listen to a question about a picture and choose the right description.
• 短句問答 – Short questions and replies: pick the natural reply, e.g. 你要喝什麼？ nǐ yào hē shénme – what would you like to drink?
• 對話 – Dialogues: two speakers, short exchange; questions ask about time, place or plans.
• 段落 – Longer recordings: an announcement or short talk, often with several questions.

Band A Reading: 5 question types

Reading has 45 multiple-choice items and 5 matching items. With 60 minutes for 50 items you have about 1 minute 12 seconds per item, so do not get stuck on one question.

• 看圖選句 – Picture and sentence: choose the sentence that matches the picture.
• 選詞填空 – Gap filling: choose the word for a sentence.
• 短文填空 – Cloze passage: fill gaps in a short text.
• 實用文閱讀 – Practical texts: notices, menus, timetables, signs.
• 配對 – Matching: on Hanzi Pass, 5 items share 6 options A–F.

Cut scores for level 1 and level 2

Each skill is reported on SC-TOP's 0–80 Rasch scale, so a raw score cannot be converted exactly. Hanzi Pass uses a linear conversion (correct answers ÷ 50 × 80) and labels the result as an estimate.

Example: Listening 58 and Reading 55. Listening reaches level 2 (≥ 57); Reading reaches only level 1 (≥ 42 but < 60). Hanzi Pass reports a level per skill and uses the lower one as the overall level – level 1 here. The current certificate rule is not fully confirmed, so check with TECO or your test centre.

• Level 1 入門級 (A1): Listening ≥ 41, Reading ≥ 42.
• Level 2 基礎級 (A2): Listening ≥ 57, Reading ≥ 60.
• Below level 1: no Band A level.

Vocabulary and topics to study

Band A corresponds to roughly 1,000 words, covered by the TOCFL level 1 and level 2 lists in the vocabulary section. Learning words in phrases and model sentences sticks better than isolated words. Hanzi Pass shows TOCFL words in traditional characters with zhuyin, e.g. 學校 xuéxiào – school.

Because the paper uses pictures, short dialogues and practical texts, focus on everyday topics like the ones below. This is study advice, not an official topic list.

• Greetings, introducing yourself and your family: 我叫… wǒ jiào – my name is…
• Time and dates: 幾點 jǐ diǎn – what time, 星期三 xīngqí sān – Wednesday.
• Shopping and prices: 多少錢 duōshǎo qián – how much.
• Food and ordering: 菜單 càidān – menu.
• Getting around: 捷運站 jiéyùn zhàn – metro station, 出口 chūkǒu – exit.
• Notices and signs: 營業時間 yíngyè shíjiān – opening hours, 禁止吸菸 jìnzhǐ xīyān – no smoking.

Listening tips

• Scan the pictures and options before the recording starts and predict the key words (numbers, times, places).
• In 短句問答, catch the question word: 誰 shéi – who, 哪裡 nǎlǐ – where, 什麼時候 shénme shíhou – when.
• In 對話, the answer often sits in the last line or where a speaker changes their mind (但是 dànshì – but, 還是 háishi – or).
• Recordings play once: if you miss one, pick the most likely answer and move on.
• Listen a little every day, without the transcript on the first listen.

Reading tips

• Get used to traditional characters early: 這 zhè (这), 們 men (们), 會 huì (会), 給 gěi (给) appear constantly.
• For 選詞填空 and 短文填空, decide which word class fits (verb, measure word, adverb) before reading the options.
• For 實用文閱讀, read the question first, then scan for numbers, times and prices – you do not need every character.
• For 配對, answer the sure ones first and cross out used options.
• Never leave a blank: guessing beats an empty answer on a multiple-choice paper.

A study plan for Band A

Start with the placement test to see where you stand. Then study vocabulary daily, check meanings in the dictionary and drill each question type in practice.

Every one or two weeks, take a timed TOCFL Band A mock test, review your mistakes and note new words. When your estimated scores sit above the level 2 cut scores in both skills, try a Band B mock test.
