Tips

  • Read the whole sentence before writing: both are zài, but 我在家 (at) differs from 明天再来 (again).
  • Use Sino-Vietnamese readings to pick between homophones: 在 (tại) / 再 (tái), 做 (tố — to do) / 坐 (tọa — to sit) / 作 (tác — 作业), 记 (ký — 记住) / 机 (cơ — 机场).
  • Check the tone mark: 买 mǎi (buy) / 卖 mài (sell), 问 wèn (ask) / 闻 wén (smell), 睡 shuì / 水 shuǐ.
  • On paper you write by hand: practise characters with easy stroke mistakes such as 己 / 已, 午 / 牛, 休 / 体, 问 / 间, 买 / 实. On the 网考 and on Hanzi Pass you type pinyin and pick the character, so the usual error is picking the wrong candidate.

Jebakan umum

  • 的 / 得 / 地 when the pinyin is de: look at what follows — a noun → 的, a verb → 地, and if the blank follows a verb → 得.
  • 他 / 她 / 它 (tā): decide from context whether it is a man, a woman or an animal/thing.
  • Writing traditional forms familiar from Taiwanese or Hong Kong media (們, 說, 時): HSK uses simplified (们, 说, 时).

跑完步以后我很 ,想喝一大杯水。

Pembahasan

Step 1: read the whole sentence: after running I'm very …, I want a big glass of water. The blank follows “很”, so it is an adjective. Step 2: the pinyin “kě” (third tone) fits two HSK 3 characters: “可” (as in 可以) and “渴” (thirsty). The clause “想喝一大杯水” (want to drink water) shows it must be “渴”. Step 3: how to write it: the water radical “氵” on the left – thirst needs water – and “曷” on the right. Common mistake: writing “喝” (hē, to drink), which has the same right-hand part but the mouth radical “口” instead of “氵”.

下个月我们要 家了,新家离公司很近。

Pembahasan

Step 1: “……家了” with “新家” (new home) in the next clause means moving house. Step 2: the pinyin “bān” (first tone) is also the sound of “班” (class, shift), but “班家” means nothing; “搬家” (to move house) is the word. Step 3: “搬” has the hand radical “扌” on the left – you move things with your hands – and “般” on the right. Tip: “班” has “王” on both sides (上班, 班长); “搬” has the hand radical (搬家, 搬东西).

这个西瓜又大又 ,你多吃点儿。

Pembahasan

Step 1: “又……又……” joins two adjectives: the watermelon is big and … – we need a taste word. Step 2: the pinyin “tián” (second tone) gives “甜” (sweet), which suits “西瓜” (watermelon) and the offer “你多吃点儿” (have some more). Step 3: “甜” is “舌” (tongue) on the left and “甘” (sweet) on the right – the tongue tastes sweetness. Don't confuse it with “天” (tiān, sky): different tone and meaning.
