TOCFL Band C · Reading · questions 21–50
Part 2 (questions 21–50): long texts — editorials, popular science, culture, policy, official documents, sometimes with a table of figures — each with 3–4 questions. There is a lot to read in about 40 minutes, so reading strategically matters more than reading every sentence closely.

Tips
- Read the questions first, then the first and last sentence of each paragraph to get the outline; read closely only the paragraph that holds what you need.
- The main question types: best topic or title, the author's attitude (作者對…的態度), inference (由本文可知), word meaning in context, reference (文中「此」指的是什麼). Each needs its own way of reading.
- Separate the author's view from others': 有人主張…, 一般認為… usually introduce a view about to be rejected; what follows 然而/事實上/筆者認為 is the author's position.
- Official documents, regulations and tables — practical reading (實用閱讀) at a high level — demand exact reading of conditions and figures: 須、得、不得、應、除…外、以上/以下、逾期.
- Watch double negatives: 不得不 (have no choice but to), 非…不可 (must), 不無道理 (not without reason), 未嘗不可 (might as well, not impossible).
- The reading level is decided separately: Band C needs 52/80 for Level 5 and 69/80 for Level 6 (about 33 and 44 correct out of 50, estimated) — the Level 6 reading cut is the highest in TOCFL, leaving room for barely six mistakes.
Common traps
- Choosing a half-right option: the first part matches the text but the second overstates it or reverses cause and effect.
- Mistaking a view the author quotes for the author's own view.
- Sino-Vietnamese false friends: 檢討 (“kiểm thảo”, a formal self-criticism in Vietnamese) means reviewing what went wrong in Taiwan; 單純 (“đơn thuần”, merely) also means innocent or pure-hearted; 同志 (“đồng chí”, comrade) usually refers to gay people in Taiwanese media.
- Spending too long on the first texts and guessing the last ten questions; give each text about four minutes.
