Listen and retell

Questions 1–3: listen to a 120–200-character passage read by one speaker (played once), then retell it in your own words within 2 minutes. Each item is worth 10/100, 30 points for the part. On Hanzi Pass the AI scores pronunciation, tones, fluency, content and grammar; you need the main points, not the exact wording.

Tip

  • Take notes with symbols instead of full characters, in four boxes: time (年/月, 以前→后来→现在), people (initials: 阮 = 阮文南, 经 = 经理), events (→ for sequence, × for a setback, ? for worry), result (✓, ↑ up, ↓ down, numbers as digits: 21km, 30%).
  • While listening, catch time and turning words — 以前、后来、一开始、没想到、不过、然而、于是、最后、从那以后 — they are the skeleton of your retelling.
  • Retell with a fixed frame: topic sentence (这段话讲的是……) → 先……然后……最后…… → closing line or lesson (他明白了…… / 说话人认为……). The frame keeps you going even if you lose a detail.
  • Turn direct speech into reported speech: “我很紧张” → 他说自己很紧张; “这是你一个人的报告吗？” → 经理问他这是不是他一个人的报告. Change the passage's 我 into 说话人 or the character's name.
  • Paraphrase with simpler words when a hard one slips: 向顾客解释塑料袋对环境的危害 → 给顾客讲塑料袋对环境不好. Accurate and fluent scores better than hesitating over a difficult word.
  • Aim for 100–150 characters, about 60–90 seconds at an even pace; stop when you have covered the points. You don't need the full 2 minutes, and padding by repetition costs content marks.

Perangkap lazim

  • Trying to recall every sentence verbatim: you get stuck after the first line and lose the outcome. Cover the four main points rather than reproducing one sentence exactly.
  • Dropping the last line, which usually carries the lesson or opinion (他明白了……, 厂长说……). It is the main idea; missing it costs heavily on content.
  • Saying Vietnamese names with Vietnamese sounds: 阮文南 is Ruǎn Wénnán, 河江 is Héjiāng, 大叻 is Dàlè. If unsure, use 他 / 她 / 她的老家.
  • Keeping the original speaker's 我 makes it sound as if the story happened to you; switch to the third person.

This is a story with a turning point: preparing a presentation → a page is missing → he stays calm → he is praised. You do not need every word, but keep the four main points and the closing lesson (准备得再充分，也要学会灵活处理问题). Minor details such as “前一天晚上都没睡好” can shrink to “他很紧张”. Reusing 不但没有……还/反而…… (not only didn't… but…) earns credit. The excellent answer adds a topic sentence, uses 先……然后……最后…… and a 把 sentence, so it flows better. You are scored on content coverage, fluency and pronunciation, not on reciting the original.

The passage tells of a small change at a market in time order: 以前 → 去年 → 一开始 → 后来 → 现在. These time words are the skeleton of your retelling, so jot them down first. Must-keep content: Auntie Chen's idea (bring a bag, pay less), the first reaction (觉得麻烦), her patient explanations and the result (越来越多). You may simplify 向顾客解释塑料袋对环境的危害 to 给顾客讲塑料袋对环境不好 and keep the meaning. The excellent answer opens with a topic sentence and uses 先……然后……最后……, so it sounds like a complete story.
