Gap filling
TOCFL Band B · Membaca · soal 1–20
Part 1 of the Band B reading test (questions 1–20): passages with numbered blanks, about five per passage; for each blank you choose one of four words or phrases. It tests collocations, near-synonyms, connectors and grammar in context. The reading test is 50 questions in 60 minutes.

Tips
- Budget your time: about 18–20 minutes for these 20 questions, leaving around 40 minutes for the 30 comprehension questions that follow.
- Learn collocations, not single words: 提高水準, 解決問題, 養成習慣, 參加活動, 增加收入, 保護環境. Many wrong options fail only because they do not go with the noun that follows.
- Paired connectors are the quickest clue: 雖然…但是, 不但…而且, 只要…就, 只有…才, 即使…也, 無論…都, 既然…就. 才 in the second clause → think 只有; 都 → 無論／不管.
- Know your separable verbs: 幫忙 takes no direct object (幫我一個忙) while 幫助 does (幫助別人); 見面 → 跟他見面, never 見面他.
- The passages use Taiwanese vocabulary: 網路, 軟體, 資訊, 品質, 計畫, 影片, 簡訊, 打工, 健保卡. Learn words in their Taiwanese traditional form so you do not waste time guessing.
Jebakan umum
- Words that share a Sino-Vietnamese syllable but are used differently: 改變 (change), 改善 (improve a situation), 改進 (improve a method), 改正 (correct a mistake) — all read “cải”.
- Confusing 經驗 and 經歷: 經驗 is experience as know-how, 經歷 is what you have been through; 我有三年的工作經驗 but 這是一段難忘的經歷.
- Judging only the sentence with the blank and ignoring the one before: after 因此 the blank must be a result of the previous sentence, not just something that sounds fine.
