Listen and repeat

HSKK Beginner · ការនិយាយ · សំណួរ 1–15

Questions 1–15: hear one short sentence (about 6–12 characters, HSK 1–2 words) and repeat it exactly. Each sentence is played once; after the beep you have about 12 seconds to speak. The 15 items are worth about 30 of 100 points, scored on completeness, tones and pronunciation.

គន្លឹះ

  • While listening, split the sentence into 2–3 meaning groups: 我们公司 / 在北宁 / 离河内不远. Three chunks are easier to hold than ten loose syllables; when speaking, run each chunk together and pause only lightly between them.
  • Start right after the beep, while the sentence is still “ringing” in your head. Don't translate into Vietnamese first — repeat the sound, including the intonation (a 吗 question lifts slightly, a statement falls).
  • Third-tone sandhi: when two third tones meet, the first sounds almost like a second tone (你好 ní hǎo, 我想买 wó xiáng mǎi, 请给我 qíng géi wǒ); a third tone before any other tone only dips low (手机 shǒujī, 北京 Běijīng); only a third tone at the end of a chunk is said in full.
  • 一 and 不 change tone: 不 before a fourth tone becomes bú (不是 bú shì, 不太 bú tài) and stays bù before tones 1–3 (不远 bù yuǎn); 一 before a fourth tone becomes yí (一次 yí cì) and yì before tones 1–3 (一杯 yì bēi, 一点儿 yìdiǎnr).
  • Use the neutral tone in the right places: 的、了、吗、吧、子 (杯子) and the second syllable of 东西、朋友、喜欢、认识 are short and light, with no tone — the sentence then sounds native.
  • If you lose a word, still finish the sentence with the right intonation: one missing character costs far less than stopping halfway or staying silent.

អន្ទាក់ទូទៅ

  • Mixing zh/ch/sh with z/c/s: 是 shì comes out like Vietnamese “sư”, 三 sān blurs into shān, 吃 chī into 次 cì. Curl the tongue tip back for zh/ch/sh/r, keep it flat behind the teeth for z/c/s; ch, c and q need a strong puff of air.
  • ü and -n/-ng: 鱼 yú, 女 nǚ and 去 qù need rounded lips (not “dú” or “nủy”); keep 站 zhàn apart from 张 zhāng and 人 rén from 冷 lěng: for -n the tongue tip touches the ridge, for -ng the tongue pulls back.
  • Confusing tones 2 and 3: 离 lí, 人 rén and 条 tiáo rise straight up without dipping first; Vietnamese speakers often say a second tone like the “hỏi” tone, which sounds like a third tone.
  • Reading names the Sino-Vietnamese way: 越南 Yuènán, 河内 Hénèi, 北京 Běijīng, 咖啡 kāfēi — not “Việt Nam”, “Hà Nội”, “Bắc Kinh”, “cà phê”.

This sentence has four third tones in a row: 我想买两 (wǒ xiǎng mǎi liǎng), then 本 (běn), so reading it syllable by syllable sounds heavy and invites mistakes. First split it into two meaning groups: 我想买 / 两本书. Apply third-tone sandhi inside each group: a third tone before another third tone is said almost like a second tone, giving wó xiáng mǎi / liáng běn shū. 本 before 书 (first tone) is only a low half-third tone, without the rise. Note that 书 (shū) starts with the retroflex sh, not the Vietnamese “x”. When you repeat, say each group in one breath, pause very lightly between them and let your voice fall at the end of the statement.

The sentence has two short halves and the comma is the pause: 他不是中国人 / 是越南人. The first sound point is 不: 不 (bù) before the fourth tone 是 (shì) changes to a second tone, bú shì; keeping the fourth tone sounds harsh. Second, the retroflex sounds: 中 (zhōng), 是 (shì) and 人 (rén) all need the tongue tip curled back — don't say 是 like Vietnamese “sư” or 人 like “dân”. Watch the nasal endings: 中 (zhōng) ends in -ng, 人 (rén) ends in -n. Finally, 越南 (Yuènán) is said the Chinese way: yuè with rounded lips (the ü sound) and nán rising — don't let the Sino-Vietnamese “Việt Nam” slip out.

Split the sentence into three meaning groups: 这儿 / 离车站 / 不太远, each only 2–3 syllables, so it is easy to hold in memory. The sentence drills zh and ch: 这儿 (zhèr) and 站 (zhàn) are unaspirated, while 车 (chē) has a strong puff of air — hold a hand in front of your mouth to feel it. 站 (zhàn) ends in -n, not zhàng. 离 (lí) is a rising second tone that Vietnamese speakers often turn into a third tone (lǐ) — the classic tone 2 / tone 3 mix-up. 不太 (bú tài) is again 不 changing before a fourth tone, and 远 (yuǎn) has the rounded ü and a low third tone at the end.
