Questions 21–25: each item shows a picture and one word (with pinyin). Mark ✓ if the word names the picture, ✗ if not. The HSK 1 reading section gives 17 minutes for 20 items; this part should take only 2–3 minutes.

Step 1: read the word: “喝” (hē – to drink). Step 2: look at the picture: a boy is holding a glass and drinking water, which is exactly “喝水” (drink water). Step 3: compare – the word and the picture match, so the answer is 对 (true). Don't confuse “喝” (drink) with “吃” (chī – eat): only a picture of the boy eating, say, an apple would make it 错. Tip: for a verb, ask “what is the person in the picture doing?” before comparing.

Step 1: the word is “睡觉” (shuìjiào – to sleep). Step 2: the picture shows a person sitting and watching TV, “看电视” (kàn diànshì), with eyes open. Step 3: “睡觉” would need someone asleep in bed, but this person is awake and watching TV, so the answer is 错 (false). Common trap: seeing someone relaxing at home and guessing “sleeping”; look at the main action in the picture, which is watching TV.

Step 1: split “出租车” (chūzūchē – taxi) into “出租” (to rent out) + “车” (vehicle): a car you hire. Step 2: the picture shows a car with a taxi sign on its roof, which is a taxi. Step 3: the word and the picture match, so the answer is 对 (true). Only a picture of a plane (“飞机” fēijī) or a station (“火车站” huǒchēzhàn) would make it 错. Tip: words containing “车” (vehicle) usually name a means of transport.
