Gap filling
TOCFL Band C · စာဖတ်ခြင်း · မေးခွန်း 1–20
Part 1 of the Band C reading test (questions 1–20): formal passages with numbered blanks, about five per passage; you choose the right word, idiom or connector from four options. The options are usually close in meaning and differ in nuance, collocation or register. The reading test is 50 questions in 60 minutes.

အကြံပြုချက်များ
- Learn written-style collocations: 發揮作用, 採取措施, 引起關注, 造成影響, 達成共識, 面臨挑戰, 提供協助. Near-synonyms are usually wrong because they do not go with that noun.
- Advanced paired connectors: 固然…但, 與其…不如, 寧可…也不, 不僅…更, 儘管…仍, 一旦…便, 既…又; purpose: 以便／以免. Look at the other half to choose the missing one.
- Recognise classical function words in modern written Chinese: 之 (= 的), 其 (its, their), 於 (at, towards), 以 (with, in order to), 則 (then), 亦 (also), 皆 (all), 而 (and yet, but).
- Tell nuances apart: 嚴格 (strict, of requirements), 嚴厲 (stern, of attitude), 嚴重 (serious, of consequences), 嚴肅 (solemn, earnest). Ask whether the subject is a person, a rule or an outcome.
- Timing: about 15–18 minutes for these 20 questions so that more than 40 minutes remain for comprehension.

- Choosing by familiar Sino-Vietnamese sound: 後果 (“hậu quả”) is negative, 結果 is neutral and 效果 is a positive effect.
- Choosing an idiom with the right meaning but the wrong object: 津津有味 describes enjoying food or being absorbed in listening or reading, not hard work.
- Reading only the sentence with the blank: in Band C the right word usually depends on the argument of the whole paragraph (contrast, concession, escalation).
